European Winter Travel Sentiment Confirms Shift to Season Extension and Authentic Experiences
The travel industry is witnessing a definitive move beyond peak season constraints, as an increasing number of Europeans plan getaways during the winter period, with Greece ranking among their preferred destinations. Despite challenges posed by climate change and economic uncertainty, European travel interest remains robust. According to the latest European Travel Commission (ETC) survey, "Monitoring Sentiment for Intra-European Travel – Wave 23," 73% of Europeans intend to travel between October 2025 and March 2026, a stable commitment compared to the previous year. Greece maintains a strong position, securing the 7th spot in travel preferences with a 5% share, trailing only Spain (12%), Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Portugal.
This shift involves not only changing the time of travel but also the underlying philosophy. Approximately six out of ten travelers are choosing to remain in a single destination, deliberately avoiding continuous movement and prioritizing immersion. This "one-destination" trend is highly visible in city breaks (71%) and sun-and-sea holidays (68%). Conversely, those seeking cultural immersion (44%) or contact with nature (42%) are more inclined to explore diverse regions within the same country. The new objective is no longer to "see as much as possible," but to cultivate a more substantial and authentic experience of the visited location.
