Global Tourism Enters New Era of Strategic Growth
The WTM Global Travel Report, unveiled at the World Travel Market in London, confirms that the global tourism sector is entering a new historic phase of development. Following the pandemic recovery, the worldwide travel ecosystem is projected to outpace the growth of the overall global economy for the next decade.
Prepared in partnership with Oxford Economics’ Tourism Economics, the report forecasts a robust 3.5% annual growth for the travel industry through 2035, significantly higher than the 2.5% projected for total global GDP. In tangible terms, tourism's economic footprint is expected to surpass $16 trillion, accounting for nearly 12% of the world's total economic output. This powerful projection underscores tourism's increasing role as one of the most strategic sectors globally.
Consumer habits are shifting, with international travelers now heavily prioritizing experiences over material possessions. The demand is strong for more meaningful and authentic travel, where deep contact with local communities, unique experiences, and gastronomy are primary selection criteria. This drive for local storytelling compels destinations to fundamentally redefine their offerings.
This growth is matched by massive infrastructure investment. Over 15,000 new aircraft are on order from major manufacturers. The global cruise market is also expanding rapidly, expected to exceed 38 million passengers by 2025 with 15 new ships entering service. Furthermore, the hotel sector is expanding its capacity by over 500,000 new rooms this year alone, with another one million rooms currently under construction worldwide.
In summary, the report concludes that the global tourism sector is initiating a new cycle where technological advancements, experiential values, international mobility, and infrastructure investments are converging to create a stronger, more resilient, and diversified tourism environment.
