Reimagine Tourism in Greece
Greek tourism has become in recent years the most stable and bright spot of an economy that has gone through seismic crises. In every wave of uncertainty – from the fiscal adventure to energy instability and climate upheavals – tourism has acted as a hedge. It has brought in foreign exchange, created jobs, kept small businesses alive, and breathed life into areas that would otherwise have seen desertification expand. It is no exaggeration to say that without this sector the country would not have managed to return to a stable trajectory.
The two-day Reimagine Tourism conference, organized by "K", highlighted all the opportunities, risks and challenges in this sector that is so important for the country. For example, it was more than clear that success has begun to create its own shadows. Overtourism, that is, the excessive pressure that certain destinations are subjected to, threatens to erode precisely what created the flourishing, the natural beauty, the cultural authenticity, the everyday life of local communities. Where visitors once found tranquility and authenticity, they now encounter queues, noise and a sense of saturation. Where residents lived harmoniously, today they struggle with skyrocketing rents, pressure on infrastructure and the loss of local identity. These contradictions are not a Greek phenomenon. From Venice to Barcelona, major tourist destinations are looking for ways to restore balance. But Greece is unique in that its economic resilience depends more on tourism than other European countries. This means that it cannot implement solutions that will “close the door.” It needs a carefully considered strategy that allows for continued growth, but also protects the places that support it.
