Is There More Than "Sun and Sea" in Athens?

Greek Tourism: Studies show that the "Sun and Sea" model is outdated – Authenticity is what tourists want. The element of authenticity emerges as the crucial requirement of the tourism industry in Greece in the face of the outdated "Sun - Sea" model in relation to the modern demands of visitors - especially with regard to generation Z.

The conclusion stems from a special study on the digital transformation of tourism and proposals presented at the participatory workshop with the tourism ecosystem in Central Macedonia, by the One Stop Liaison Office of the Region's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Support Mechanism.

According to the study's findings, visitors' stimuli from cinema, literature and social networks are confronting the tourism industry with a new reality, which requires bold and innovative responses from professionals in the field.

Towards the green and digital transition, the research highlighted the use of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) and other immersive technologies for experiential access to culture. Another research highlighted the strategic role of advanced underwater vehicles (ROVs) through a comprehensive and immediately applicable solution for the protection of the marine environment, the transparent management and the promotion of coastal areas.

Despite the rich offer of ready-made technological applications and the urgent need of businesses for modernization, as highlighted in the workshop, the gap between research and the market remains noticeable and bridging it constitutes a complex challenge, with industry experts proposing specific strategic solutions. In this direction, the potential of clusters was highlighted, which allow small and medium-sized enterprises to join forces, share the cost of innovation and invest jointly in Research and Development activities that would be inaccessible on an individual level.
