Athens Riviera Yet to be Discovered

The vast majority of international visitors to Athens—roughly 71%—opt to skip the Attica coastline and the nearby Saronic islands entirely. According to a recent study by GBR Consulting, conducted alongside Athens International Airport and the local hotel association, the region struggles with a visibility problem despite its proximity to the capital’s famous landmarks.

While a simple lack of time is the most common reason for this trend, there are significant logistical and perceptional barriers at play. Approximately 14% of travelers choose more internationally recognized island chains like the Cyclades, while another 7% admit they simply lacked information about the Athenian Riviera. Beyond these factors, visitors cited concerns over difficulty of navigating local transport. Since many tourists prefer staying in central Athens and avoid renting cars, the journey to coastal ports or suburban beaches is often viewed as a hassle rather than a convenience.

However, the outlook is not entirely negative. Survey data shows that satisfaction regarding beach facilities and infrastructure is actually on the rise. To better capitalize on its natural assets, experts suggest that Attica needs more than just luxury hotel developments; it requires a cohesive marketing strategy and improved transit links that make the transition from the Acropolis to the sea feel seamless for the modern traveler.
